GammaTech Durabook S15C Emerges, Shames Most With Its Durability

The Ultra-Rugged GammaTech S15C Offers Military Rated Protections And A Decent Hardware Package

We’ve all been there, from time to time. We’ve taken our laptop out to a Starbucks or what have you, let it get clunked around in the trunk of our cars, dropped it, all those kinds of things. And sure, most of the time, they shrug off these minor slings and arrows of life and carry on, but some laptops don’t worry about this kind of thing. Ever. Laptops like the GammaTech Durabook S15C.

And yes, the picture you’re looking at above? That’s the GammaTech Durabook S15C. It certainly doesn’t look like a laptop that can take a licking, but this one’s got a lot of impressive secrets hidden in its otherwise nondescript chassis, much like a certain mild-mannered reporter with a passion for tights.

The GammaTech Durabook S15C is built out of a magnesium alloy. That’s fully 20 times stronger than ABS plastic and allows it to meet Mil-Standard 810G for resistance to physical (as opposed to electric) shock. It’s got a spill-resistant keyboard, an optical disc tray lock that keeps the tray from accidentally ejecting when dropped, and plenty else that gives this some added resistance.

And this isn’t just a tough laptop–it’s a strong one too. It’s packing your choice of an Intel Core i5 or i7 processor, a 15.6 inch display, two dual-channel DDR3 memory slots, integrated Intel graphics, an on-board microphone, three USB ports, a serial port, Ethernet, wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity, a smart card reader, and more besides. There’s even room to throw in a Blu-ray burner if you want one.

You’re probably already frantically grabbing for your wallet and car keys to go get hands on this superhuman laptop, but sad news–there’s no information on release dates and pricing just yet. However, you can figure that it’s not going to be cheap given what it’s packing, but it will be pretty likely to last you a good long time.
