Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Is Heading To Verizon, But Likely Not Only To Verizon

Sony Ericsson CTO States Xperia Play Playstation Phone May Launch With Multiple US Carriers, One Of Which "Could" Be AT&T

Sony Ericsson CTO Jan Uddenfelt was recently interviewed during Mobile World Congress and while it seemed to cover a wide variety of topics, there were a few takeouts in the form of the Xperia Play smartphone as well as lessons in terms of older versions of Android and the lack of updates on the current Sony Ericsson Android device lineup..

That said, lets begin with the Xperia Play and the fact that it is coming to Verizon here in the US. The good news here is that it looks like it could potentially come available with other carriers aside from Verizon, though at this time no other announcements have been made. Instead, it was hinted that one of those carriers could be AT&T.

“Uddenfeldt also clarified that the Xperia Play is not exclusive to Verizon, and that AT&T Mobility, for instance, could launch the phone.”

Of course, while it would be nice to learn which other carrier may have plans, the real news at this point is that Verizon does not have the exclusive. Otherwise, another topic that came to light was the issue of upgrading Android. According to Uddenfeldt;

“A year ago, the awareness of the importance of being on the latest Android release wasn’t in the company,”

Nice that he is being so upfront. Granted, that does not help ease the pain of those who previously purchased an Android handset with hopes of getting a later version in the form of a software update, but at the same time it is nice to see this being addressed.

With that, it was also pointed out that the four new Android handsets (including the Xperia Play) will launch with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and that the Xperia Play would have as many as 60 games in the Android Market and that it will likely ship with as many as 10 pre-loaded games.
