MWC 2011 Live: HTC ChaCha & Salsa Super Facebook Android Phones Hands-on… We Wish

HTC Locked the HTC ChaCha & Salsa Behind an Unbreakable Glass; Wouldn’t Let Us Touch Them

As you already know there are no Facebook phones, Mark “Denial” Zuckerber denialed (pardon the loose use of English vocabulary) that a couple of times. Then HTC came out with two Android phones, the ChaCha and the Salsa, which are Android devices with dedicated Facebook buttons on. Then Mark came along and denied everything again as there are no Facebook phones.

But why include a Facebook button then? Are either HTC and/or Facebook assume we’re that slow when using smartphones that we won’t be able to go to Facebook unless helped with a dedicated key? I demand a Twitter button too then!

Why am I ranting? Well that’s the response HTC gets for not really making those phones available for hands-ons. After all why launch them at MWC if they’re not ready? Why keep them locked behind a glass? Why not show the world what the ChaCha and Salsa are all about?

And what’s up with those dancing names there?

Something’s obviously wrong in the whole picture, but since these devices don’t appear to be top of the line Android handsets, I’ll just run quickly through their specs and features remind you that we already covered them today, both the ChaCha and the Salsa.

The HTC ChaCha will offer you the following specs and features:

  • 600MHz processor
  • Android (unspecified version on the official material given at the booth) with HTC Sense
  • 2.6-inch touchscreen display
  • 512MB of ROM
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 5-megapixel camera
  • front-facing VGA camera
  • full QWERTY keyboard
  • weight 120g
  • Facebook button

The HTC Salsa on the other hand is a bit smarter but when you check it out you realize it’s a almost a twin of the HTC Chacha. And when I look at it I can’t help but think HTC Hero. Anyone remembers that great Android phone from a couple of years back? Anyway here are the specs and features, almost similar with the one above:

  • 600MHz processor
  • Android (unspecified version on the official material given at the booth) with HTC Sense
  • 3.4-inch touchscreen display
  • 512MB of ROM
  • 512MB of RAM
  • 5-megapixel camera
  • front-facing VGA camera
  • weight 120g
  • Facebook button

There are plenty of reasons for not buying either of them, the most important one being that, well, they appear not to be finished yet. And when you think about what’s out there in the Android universe, well, then you should definitely consider some other handset for your Facebook needs.
