MWC 2011: Gear Packing for the Mobile World Congress

iPhone 4, iPad & Macbook Pro in the Bag or How to Cover an Android (Mostly) Event Using Mostly Apple Gadgets

We covered CES in January in great detail, probably the most important event of the year in the tech world, and now we are getting ready to attend the Mobile World Congress in Spain, one of the most important mobile events of the year.

CES surprised everyone with the huge amount of smart mobile devices so can MWC beat that in any way? We do know we’re going to see a bunch of hot smartphones and tablets in Barcelona and most of them will be Android beasts coming from HTC, Samsung, LG or Sony Ericsson, but not only.

With that in mind you’ll find it a bit ironic to hear that yours truly is about to get ready to cover MWC using mostly Apple gadgets.

Apple Macbook Pro

My main weapon will be a 15-inch Macbook Pro, even if a little heavier than a 13-inch machine but which has the power and battery juice to get me through all that MWC coverage, whether we are talking about press events or hands-on previews.

Apple iPad

The iPad is not a complete laptop but it will be my secondary computer at MWC which I’ll use for both taking quick notes but also for going online for any fast browsing and anything else that will actually help me save some precious Macbook Pro battery juice.

Apple iPhone 4

The Apple iPhone 4, the not-so perfect smartphone launched last year but, nonetheless one of the best sold devices in Apple’s inventory, is going to act as my HD video recording and on-the-go camera. I would normally go for some different camera /camcorder combo, but I’m definitely trying to keep my bag pack as light as possible while walking those floors. On top of that the iPhone will work well with the rest of my Apple gadgets when it comes to processing images and videos, not to mention using the same apps. So the iPhone is basically a jack-of-all-trades, ready to meet its most important Android opponents of 2011.

I’ll also carry a Sony point-and-shoot, as some shots will definitely require a proper camera while still keeping the overall baggage weight down and a Nokia handset that would basically help me preserve iPhone battery life. These will be my replacement killers, but they are limited when it comes to use. One will have a battery that might be depleted quite easily while the other isn’t really a smartphone with available apps on. Care to guess which is which?

So there you have it, folks, I’ll be on location in Barcelona next week for you, so stick around for more MWC details from the TFTS mobile device-loving team.
