BBC iPlayer App Comes Available (In The UK) For iPad & Android

BBC Releases iPlayer App In The UK, Available By Way Of The Android Market & iOS App Store]

As we expected, the BBC has released their iPlayer app for both the iPad as well as Android devices. Of course, with that bit of good news, there are a few catches that come along with — one of which being is that these apps are (at present) only available for those in the UK.

That aside though, similar to the release coming today we already knew that it would be limited for the UK market. And for those in the US, your apps are coming but you will have to be patient for a few months till they arrive. In the meantime, the UK apps can be found in the iOS App Store as well as the Android Market.

In terms of support for the apps, both will allow you to do things like watch live television, listen to radio and browse the current programming schedule. Other perks include being able to “scroll through and find Featured and Most Popular programs” as well as add programs to your favorites and have them ready and waiting for when you are able to watch. In terms of the available content, that will include over 400 hours of programming from the previous 7 days.

Otherwise, the apps are described as having a “simple and intuitive design with high picture quality and personalised favourites (making the most of the touch-screen UI, and a popular feature on the website).” That said, not being in the UK myself, I will have to take their word and wait for the US availability.

In terms of device support, the iPad requires iOS 3.2 or later and Android needs to be 2.2 Froyo with support for Adobe Flash. And lastly, another bit of bad news — the apps (both on Android and the iPad) will only be able to stream content using a Wi-Fi connection — in other words no streaming on the go while on a cellular (3G or 4G) connection.
