Boy Racks Up Huge Xbox Live Bill On Mom's Debit Card, Mom Blames Microsoft

Disgruntled Mother Blaming Microsoft For Excessive Xbox Live Purchases After Son Goes On A Buying Spree

A mother from Strood, Kent is furious at Microsoft after her son went on a Xbox Live spending spree with her debit card. The Daily Mail is reporting that 11-year-old Brendan Jordan used his mother’s debit card to rack up a bill totaling £1,082.52 after she linked the card to his Xbox Live account to pay for a Gold subscription.

Now the mother, Dawn Matthews, is quick to blame Microsoft for not preventing this from happening. “When I put my card details in 18 months ago I thought it was just for his membership to play online with his friends,” Matthews told The Daily Mail.

“It is ridiculous to allow someone of his age to make payments without any checks being done. It is impossible to monitor everything your children do. These companies should take some responsibility. They take advantage of vulnerable people.”

In response, Microsoft points out that there are parental controls that come built in on the consoles, which had they been enabled when Brendan created his account (and would have been automatically enabled if it had been created as a child’s account) would have prevented Brendan from charging such an enormous amount to his mother’s debit card.

This kid is old enough to realize what he’s doing. He just didn’t care. More of the blame game instead of taking responsibility for raising a sh*t head.

    2. Mike Perth says:

Oh dear. Yet another case of abrogating parental responsibility. ‘They’ should do something about it! You stupid woman – YOU are THEY! Has the sum not been building up in the 18 months since she entered her details – if that is so, I wonder if she has any idea how much she has spent herself – or will that be the credit card company’s fault for letting her have credit?

    3. Phil says:

What a pair of morons! Did the kid seriously not wonder where the money was coming from? You’re asked to confirm your purchase, and the little pound symbol before some numbers usually indicates a monetary value of some kind. To agree with the comment above, did the mother not check her credit card for 18 months? I’m sure I’d notice an average of £60 per month disappearing from my account. She’s correct in saying “it is impossible to monitor everything your children do” but surely most adults are capable of monitoring their own bank balance.
