BBC iPlayer To Hit This Week For iPad And Android At Once

No Version Envy Here, As Both Android and iOS Get BBC iPlayer At Same Time

We’ve all been there at one time or another–there’s that one show we can’t get enough of, and we don’t want to miss it. But sure enough, we get involved in something and the next thing you know, there’s seven minutes left of an hour show (this happened to me personally twice back when The Walking Dead was on AMC) and we’re cursing our inattention to the clock. The BBC understands this problem and is looking to fix it with their iPlayer, and the better news is that whether you favor Android or iOS, you’ll get your iPlayer later this week.

Yes, the BBC is taking the arguably high road of pandering to absolutely everyone–while earlier reports suggested that it would be the iPad that would be first to get their hands on the iPlayer, the latest news is that both iPad and Android users will be able to get in at the same time.

Of course, that’s only for iPad and Android users in the United Kingdom, as the US iTunes won’t get hands on either version until June. And Android users, take note–you’ll need to be running at least Froyo (Android 2.2) and Flash Player 10.1 to get in on this, and both versions will only work completely over wi-fi; 3G connections will only allow you to browse, not stream, and this will probably be the case come June when the American version hits. Naturally, there will also likely be a subscription fee, though no one seems to be talking about how much said fee will be.

However, you’ll likely be surprised to note that not only will you be able to catch up on shows you’ve missed via the catch-up features, you’ll also get to listen to BBC Radio, which originally wasn’t a part of the deal, but now is. So if you can’t get enough of British programming (which is in many cases better than you might think), keep your eyes front come June or possibly earlier.
