AT&T Details The Samsung Captivate With Android 2.2 On Support Website

AT&T Teases Captivate Users With Android 2.2 Screenshots, Still Fails To Say When Froyo Will Arrive

We can only hope this is coming just a little bit ahead of an announcement that Android 2.2 is going to roll-out for Samsung Captivate users with AT&T, however at this present time it serves more as a teaser as opposed to anything else.

With that and with no real surprise, we should clarify that as of now nothing has been announced by either Samsung or AT&T. Which almost makes this little teaser sort of seems like a cruel joke, especially considering the aggravation that many Samsung Galaxy S users are feeling at this point while they wait and wait for the update to Froyo.

But trying to stay positive, this could be a good sign. Or at the very least, a sign that AT&T and Samsung are actively working on getting Android 2.2 out for Captivate users. And as for those screenshots, they are showing the Captivate with Android 2.2 and the Samsung TouchWiz user interface.

Of course, even as Galaxy S (Captivate) users remain waiting and in many cases hoping to get the official word that Froyo is coming, we cannot help but point out that we are seeing more and more talk in terms of Android 2.3 and even 2.4 and given that — Froyo is going to be outdated before it even arrives for Captivate users.

With that, we will take this little tidbit of information and hold tight that things are progressing in a forward manner and that users will be surprised with an update alert notification sooner rather than later. That said, while it would be nice to see the update come, I have to state the obvious in that the Captivate is already on 2.1 and that is not all that bad. But to play devils advocate to my own understanding — the desire for Froyo is probably stronger mainly because it was promised as coming a long time back.

An AT&T Representative high on the food chain told me that it will be released in March, along with the atrix. AT&T is planning to bump the second quarter sales with the atrix, to keep customers from going to verizon…its going to be a marketing tool to have all there phones up to par with 2.2, and the captivate will remain on the roster as an entry level android device.

2 other reasons its being delayed:

      1. touch wiz is a horrible subsidized add on.

      2. WIFI Hotspot ability: att 3g network is already strained with all the iphones out there, imagine when the att android community gets there hands on wifi hotspot capibilty… att wants launch there 4g service to alieviate the traffic…

    2. Joe says:

At this point, I have already made the decision to leave ATT, and never purchase a Samsung phone again. I have been told Android 2.2 was coming since I made the decision to purchase the device when it came out in July (yes, 7 months ago). With that update I was promised that the GPS would work perfectly. ATT won’t change the phone for GPS issues, since they are saying it is a software issue and an update is coming. Being stuck were I can’t get an update, and can’t get another phone is horrible customer service. If the previous comment is right on the timing of the release, I’m even more glad I made the decision to leave.

there is an update for gps in the android market, from samsung, the gps works perfectly, and works indoors, and gets a lock in about 10 seconds.

i think its called samsung gps fix.

    4. Jay says:

I also a Samsung Captivate and waiting for 2.2 for long time. My decision is to leave ATT and never buy Samsung again. ATT all they care about is prevent customers to use the device in its potential. Those menu, home, Return and Search buttons on Captivate are pain of b-tt to use. Now I am much happier with LG Optimus V, even it is cheaper phone.

    5. Alan says:

I am an owner of a Samsung Captivate with firmware 2.1-update1 installed. I understand what people are saying in their online venting about AT&T and not having FROYO available. For those people let me just say, have you GOOGLE’d 2.2 for Captivate? There are 3rd party
website that have it. I don’t recommend it as they are not Samsung or AT&T official websites.

My advice is to be patient. There is a logical reason why AT&T has chosen, in partnership with Samsung, not to release 2.2 for the Captivate. Bug fixes. Android market issues. I mean c’mon. A little patience people.

      Thanks.

    6. Cluster says:

Agree with Jay. Leave ATT and Samsung behind. I will never buy either again.

    7. Flustrated says:

      PATIENT?

I have been patient for almost a year!

I made the mistake of going from Sony Erricson to this Captivate and the horrible touch-screen and regret it.

I want a phone with BUTTONS and a real button for the camera!

      Touch screen is HORRIBLE

    8. Rob says:

Why don’t you just root your phone, install a customized theme, modem, and kernel to make it faster than any phone or anything that exists for att users…thats the point of the android phone built by g$$gle: customization. iphone users all have the exact same phone…smart android users have phones with unbelievable gps capability, extremely fast web browsing, and really cool themes. google UN-CRIPPLE YOUR CAPTIVATE

    9. FLuser says:

Android 2.4 will be released in May and we are still waiting on Froyo???
Samsung sucks, this is definitely my last phone from ATT

    10. deven says:
