Motorola Xoom Price Tag & Release Date Made Official by Best Buy
Today, thanks to Best Buy (again), which seems pretty eager to reveal all future plans of Verizon, we can confirm that the Motorola Xoom, the first Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet in the world, will cost $799.99 and will be launched on February 24.

As you can see in the Best Buy ad below, the Xoom is featured in all its glory and besides the pricing details and release dates we also have accessory prices and Verizon 3G Rate plans for the Xoom. But it’s not all good news from where we’re looking.
We’re not going to comment on the price, which, even though it seems pretty expensive at first sight, will probably match Apple’s high-end iPad 2. On the other hand the entry-level iPad will still be priced at $499, and that’s where Apple could also win this fight of the titans.
We’re going to comment on a pretty bullshit move from Verizon and Motorola. Instead of offering the Motorola Xoom for subsidized prices with new two-year data contracts it looks like Verizon will hold the Xoom’s Wi-Fi connectivity for ransom. In order to activate Wi-Fi you’ll have to sign up for a 3G plan with Verizon, even if you plan to cancel the next day. That’s a wrong move on so many different levels, but we can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Speaking about Verizon 3G data plans, since you’ll have to get one to activate Wi-Fi (the more I say it the more moronic the idea sounds) on the Xoom, then here’s what you can expect to pay: $20/month for 1GB of traffic, $35/month for 3GB, $50/month for 5GB of traffic and $80/month for 10GB of traffic.
In other words, to use the tablet to browse the web, which is the number one thing you do with a tablet, via Wi-Fi, you’ll have to pay $819.99 right out of the box, if my math is correct even if you won’t want to use 3G. We’ll be back with more Xoom details later today, so keep close, subscribe to our feed and our Twitter accounts to get it all in a timely fashion.

sounds like Apple is forcing verizon to do this,,because of the Iphone.
What a moronic move by Verizon and Motorola. This will drive ALL but the worst Apple haters straight to the IPad 2. I had an Original IPad and loved it, but gave it to my Daughter in anticipation of getting a Xoom. Now, it looks like it will be an IPad 2 for me.
I won’t buy a tablet or computer that doesn’t allow me to choose my own source of Wi-Fi. Currently, I use the iPad with a Clear hotspot, and while I’d like to try out a Honeycomb tablet, I’ll wait for one that allows for Wi-Fi to be run with my Clear hotspot.
This is too high of a cost for the Xoom tablet, or any other tablet for that matter. If this ad is real, they are overpricing the Xoom based on hype. Also what is the BS about having to pay for data service for a month to activate the WiFi card, and is that some sort of a contract? No way I would pay the price listed or deal with the crap about having to activate the 3G card to later get WiFi. To anyone who will listen, don’t fall for this marketing crap! Just be patient and let the price fall before you overpay for this device.
Isn’t that price more like $855 before you even walk out the door? Verizon’s going to make sure they get their $35 activation fee too I’m sure. It is an absolute bullshit move on the part of Verizon. I want one, but the required wireless contract is just adding insult to injury. I can only hope that the folks on one of the many Android Forums out there come out with a crack that negates the Verizon BS.
I am honestly suprised that they would put this much work into creating this tablet only to blow it with a move like this that is so blatantly stealing, Americans do not like it when companies take advantage of us, this will kill their initial sales. I question a company’s IQ when decisions like this are made. Please don’t buy this Tablet!!! Wait for them to pull their heads out of their asses and disover capitalism!!
