Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Will Be Held Back Due To Console Limitations

DICE Says Battlefield 3 Multiplayer Will Be Different On PC Due To Limitations Of Xbox 360 & PS3

We may not be getting many details on Battlefield 3 until the new issue of Game Informer arrives, but some of the developers from DICE recently answered some questions from fans over Twitter. Multiplayer was a hot topic during the Q&A session, as it’s recently been revealed that the PC version will support 64 player multiplayer games, while the 360 and PS3 are limited to only 24 player match-ups.

Senior gameplay designer Alan Kertz explained the decision to limit the number of players on console versions, saying, “Of course, we didn’t say ‘oh console players don’t want 64 players.’ Network performance and cpu/gpu power and memory.”

Christina Coffin, engine developer for Battlefield 3, indicated that the 24 player limit may still change by the time everything is said and done, though, by saying, “We’ll support as many as we can + maybe extra provided it maintains the integrity of the play experience.”

So, while it’s definitely too early to tell, it looks like PS3 and Xbox 360 players might have to deal with smaller multiplayer games than their PC counterpart when Battlefield 3 drops this fall.

This reads like consoles cannot handle more than 24 players at one time. Haven’t PS3 owners already seen more in a game? M.A.G? This may be a case that if Xbox 360 can’t do it then “PS3 can’t do it too”. If this is the case it’s sad that a game is held back because of one platform. This is a case when multiplatform releases are a bad thing.

M.A.G also had shitty graphics compared to BFBC2 and no/little destruction. It doesn’t matter for me. I’ve got a sick PC and will most likely be getting all versions of the game. PC will be the best by far though.

@ Scarface – I wouldn’t be so quick to assume that the 360 is the problem here. I think this has more to do with the Frostbite 2.0 engine than one console holding the other back. MAG was able to have 256 player matches because it wasn’t the most power-hungry game graphics wise. It’s one of those special examples because Sony also runs MAG on really powerful servers, something that DICE probably can’t afford to do.

Frostbite 2.0 is going to be an engine that demands a lot from the CPUs in both the 360 and PS3. It’s important to remember that while the PS3 has had games in the past that support larger multiplayer games, so has the 360.

So really, this is more likely a limitation placed on the console versions because DICE knows that they can still run 24-player match ups on both without the game running slow and being a bad experience for everyone. We may see support for more players added, but this is just the nature of developing modern games for five and six year old consoles.
