News Corp Looking To Unload MySpace?

News Corp COO Says Time For "A New Owner", But Who Will Buy?

Okay, I think we all kind of caught this particular vibe coming down the pike, but the word coming out of News Corp about MySpace isn’t looking good in terms of it staying a News Corp property much longer. In fact, the word coming out of News Corp says they’re thinking seriously about dumping MySpace entirely.

In fact, the word from News Corp COO pretty much sums it up, complete with a little good old fashioned corporate weasel-speak in the grandest Dilbert tradition. Dig the word:

“The new MySpace has been very well received by the market and we have some very encouraging metrics. But the plan to allow MySpace to reach it’s full potential may be best achieved under a new owner.”

Of course, just because they’re thinking about it doesn’t mean it’s going to fly: first, they’d have to find someone willing to buy MySpace, and that’s a bit like buying the Amalgamated Buggy Whip Works in the height of the 1930s. Seriously, we’ve already seen MySpace get its hat handed to it by Twitter and Facebook, so it’s small wonder that News Corp is looking to dump the site. After all, MySpace just laid off a whole passel of its work force, and this is not the first time we’ve heard stirrings of discontent from News Corp who is doubtless feeling a hefty dollop of buyers’ remorse right now.

Word is they’re expressly courting potential buyers, and they’re almost certainly getting a good offer ready for someone who wants to step into the shoes of what amounts to the social network of yesteryear–seriously, I’m not the only one who abandoned a MySpace account, and seeing it as the social network that everyone used to use–but here’s the big one: who will buy it?

That’s a question I’m frankly dying to hear the answer to, and hopefully I’ll get one soon.
