GoPro BacPac Offers Easy Way To See What Your Camera Does

The BacPac Supplements Hero Cameras By Giving You An Eyepiece

You remember those Hero helmet cams? Well, some folks apparently don’t much like the idea of serving as their own viewfinder, because the crew behind the Hero has just announced the BacPac system for the Hero, giving you a way to see just what you’re shooting.

The BacPac system is designed to work with the Hero camera, and basically give you a look at just what it is your helmet camera is shooting. You have to clip it into a port on the Hero camera itself–and it also won’t work with the new Hero 960 line–and this gives your compatible Hero camera an LCD screen. With that LCD screen, you’ll be able to check the playback on your Hero camera, to make sure all the shots you got turned out all right. You’ll even be able to hear the audio generated from your helmet-cam footage with an onboard speaker and adjustable volume setting.

Here’s the interesting part, though: because the BacPac increases the thickness of the unit (it’s a clip-on device; it can hardly help but up the size a bit), the BacPac system includes some extra doors for the housing, to ensure that the watertight nature of the setup remains intact. And if you’re using your Hero to film your rip-roaring adventures down the whitewater, well, you’ll definitely want your camera nice and waterproof.

This is actually only the first of several new expansion models for the Hero (I’d personally love to see a wireless eyepiece that connects to the Hero, allowing you to zoom in, or maybe even give you night vision, in one eye connected to your Hero camera. But the BacPac in its current form, without all my fantasy bells and whistles attached (next up: infrared Predator Vision), will be coming to stores on the order of soon and with a price tag of $79.99 attached. You can also get in now direct from the company.
