Motorola Xoom Superbowl XLV Takes On Apple: “2011 Looks a Lot Like 1984” [Motorola Urges You to Defy the System, Zoom on a Motorola Xoom Instead of an Apple iPad 2; That’s the Message We Got]

We’re just about a week away from Superbowl XLV but we’re going to talk today not about the upcoming Pittsburgh Steelers vs Green Bay Packers game, but about some commercials that are going to be during it. Motorola’s Xoom is apparently going to star in one of them, and, spoiler alert, it’s a pretty bold one.

The Motorola Xoom is coming in February, which is something we’ve heard over and over these past few days, and this new Xoom ad is also confirming the imminent arrival of the first Honeycomb tablet in the world.

Motorola is practically asking you to buy a device and change the way you go about your tablet business. Entitled “Goodbye 1984” the ad starts with a simple premise, “2011 looks a lot like 1984” and that, for the connoisseurs, is a great hit at Apple.

As you already know, Apple launched the “1984” during Super Bowl XVIII, a Macintosh commercial which told you that 1984 “won’t be like ‘1984’”. Apple was asking you back then to fight against the system, and now Motorola is doing the same thing. Only this time around the system is Apple and Apple products, specifically the iPad and upcoming iPad 2.

Motorola seems to appreciate the guts Apple had to air such a Superbowl commercial 27 years ago, but it’s also attacking the company with full force:

2011 looks a lot like 1984. One authority. One design. One way to work.

It’s time for more choices. It’s time to explore. It’s time to live a free life.

The commercial then goes to show you some of the most important features of the tablet, but you’re already familiar with them, aren’t you, Xoom fans?

And below you’ll find the original “1984” commercial to make a proper comparison between the two.

Since the Xoom will be advertised on February 6, should we assume the device is coming to stores in the following days after that?
