Sony NGP Battery Life Will Be Comparable To Sony PSP [Sony Execs Promise That NGP's Battery Life Won't Be Too Bad, Sing The Praises Of The Card-Based Media Storage For Games]
With features like 3G, a big 5-inch screen, and a quad-core processor (which can consume more power than a single-core processor – don’t send me mail), you may expect the Sony NGP to get awful battery life when compared to it’s predecessor. Not so, say various Sony executives. As the NGP was unveiled this week, Sony sent their executives out on a media tour to chat up the pres corps. Both 1UP and Eurogamer ran stories saying that the the NGP battery life won’t be that bad.

Talking to 1UP.com, Sony exec Shuhei Yoshida said that because the NGP switches from the disk-based UMD to the card-based “new media format” (which is flash-based, like SD cards or Sony’s own Memory Stick), that saves some battery life just simply because they don’t need to spin disks on the UMD anymore. Remember that Sony officially says that the PSP gets 3-5 hours of battery life when gaming, so getting that on the NGP is what Sony is promising.
On the other side of the world, Sony Europe’s Andrew House told Eurogramer that the NGP will have a “good, solid battery life because of two factors.” House once again brings up the switch to flash-based media, instead of the UMD drive. He also mentions the OLED screen (which, unlike LCD screens, does not consume any power when displaying blacks). Also, don’t under estimate the four-core CPU. There has been a lot of debate and confusion on this, but depending on how applications are programmed, a four-core CPU can be more low-powered than a ‘regular’ CPU.
Will the battery life affect your decision to get a Sony NGP?
