Kinect Sales Numbers: Microsoft Says That Kinect Sold 8 Million Units In 60 Days [Kinect Is No Flop For Microsoft, Selling Double What PlayStation Move Does In First Two Months]

A few days ago, Microsoft announced their Q2 earnings results. Revenues were up 5% for the tech giant, but here’s an interesting little bit that some investors may have missed – Kinect is doing pretty well. In the PowerPoint slides attached to their earnings result, Microsoft announces that they’ve sold a whopping 8 million Kinects in the first 60 days, or about 134,000 units per day. Incredible!

There once was a time when the Xbox just dragged down the entire Microsoft entertainment division. But, as you may know, 2010 was a good year for Microsoft, and the company is reporting a 55% increase in revenue from the Entertainment division, with the company reporting $3.7 bil in revenue from that division. Robbie Bach, who? (I kid, I kid).

This is about double the amount of PlayStation Move units sold by Sony in the same timespan. The Move was released in September. By November, Sony was stating that they had sold 4.1 million units. If Sony and Microsoft are to be believed, Kinect is selling about double what Move has in the same amount of time (60 days). NPD Group reports that the Nintendo Wii sold about 1.2 million units in its first 60 days, but supply was an issue back then (if you remember how hard to was to get a Wii when it first came out).

Microsoft CFO Peter Klein said about Kinect during the call:

We are enthusiastic about the consumer response to our holiday lineup of products, including the launch of Kinect. The 8 million units of Kinect sensors sold in just 60 days far exceeded our expectations. The pace of business spending, combined with strong consumer demand, led to another quarter of operating margin expansion and solid earnings per share growth.

Looks good for Microsoft. I predicted before Kinect launched that we would see the hardware eventually get PC support, even if just because Microsoft spent a fortune on the back-end tech and the Kinect project is too expensive to be used on just video games. Steve Ballmer confirmed this at his CES 2011 keynote address, too.
