Sony’s PlayStation 3 Piracy-Stemming Security Updates Start Rolling In [PlayStation 3 Security Updates Being Dished Out By Sony As Anti-Piracy Panacea]
It was bound to happen, but I’m slightly surprised that Sony have managed to get their act together so quickly. Sony’s first salvo in the Great PS3 Piracy War of ’11 has been fired, firmware update 3.56 by its maiden name. There is only one sort of update that brings no features whatsoever, the sort which is met with everything from mild annoyance to resigned indifference by PS3 and PSP gamers alike. The security firmware update. But we should hear it from the proverbial horse’s mouth anyway.

“This is a minor update that adds a security patch,” says Eric Lempel, VP or Network Operations for Sony Computer Entertainment America. Mercifully brief, then, not that there’s a whole lot more to be said on the subject. Sony is rumored to be considering introducing serial keys for its games going forward, but we can understand how “here’s a security update, oh, by the way, we’re putting in a new per-game security system that failed the PC industry and only hassles people who actually buys the game” didn’t make the cut.
