Android 2.3.1 Gingerbread for iPhone & iPod touch Now Available; Droid X, Droid Incredible & Others Still Wanting

Unofficial Gingerbread Update Available for iOS Devices (Jailbreak Req'd); Blasphemy, Some Will Say

It’s one thing to have an Android version ported to a smartphone that runs, by default, an OS of the competition, but it’s quite another to have the latest Android version, Gingerbread in this case since we’re talking about smartphones, installed on an iPhone or iPod touch even before the hot Android smartphones out there will get it.

That’s right, if you own older iOS devices, such as the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 2G or the iPod touch first generation then you will be able to install an unofficial (although it’s pretty clear that installing Android on iOS devices is as unofficial as it gets) version of Android 2.3.1.

There is some manual labor involved, jailbreak included, in order to run Android on your iOS device, but if that’s what you want it to run then, by all means, pursue your desires since it’s your money that paid for the gadget in the first place.

On comparison, hot Android smartphones like the Motorola Droid X, the HTC Droid Incredible, the HTC EVO 4G, the Motorola Droid 2 or the Samsung Galaxy S, not to mention the original Nexus One, are not yet running Gingerbread. Not even unofficial builds.

That’s a little troubling, to see your main competitor run the latest Android version before your flagship devices get updated to Gingerbread. Add to that the fact that the Nexus One is still on Froyo or that some manufacturers (yes, Sony Ericsson, it’s you!) will not upgrade their perfectly capable devices to Android 2.2 and you’ll see that Google is still to deal with a major flaw of its mobile OS: timely upgrades. But hey, that’s the price to pay for being open-source!

What’s next? Honeycomb on the iPad? Has anyone installed Android Gingerbread on his or her iOS device? How is it working out for you?

Your article is actually incorrect! My droid incredible has been running gingerbread since the middle of december unofficially. Implying iphone got the unofficial update prior to top android phones is incorrect. Evo and nexus also have rom builds.
