Archos 48 Internet Tablet Quietly Unveiled, Currently Available & Priced At $299 [Archos Rolls-Out The Archos 48 Android Tablet, Looks Like The Archos 5 Except Less Expensive & Without The GPS]
Archos has officially rolled-out another model in their Internet Tablet device lineup — the Archos 48, which some may confuse with the previously existing Archos 5 in terms of looks and most specs. The Archos 48, while less expensive as compared to the Archos 5 is missing a few items. Not to mention, given the version of Android, we question the release.

That said, lets first mention Android — the Archos 48 is running Android 1.6. The one perk here comes in with the Archos community and the ability to add the Android Market by way of a third party and unofficial app. Still, while we can point out the bright side there, it stands that some apps will not be found given they are starting to require Android 2.0 or later in more and more cases.
Otherwise, as we mentioned the lower price, we must also remind you that this device is not sporting the latest or greatest. According to the spec sheet, the processor is an 800MHz ARM Cortex A8 and the device has 256MB RAM. Other specs include a 4.8 inch resistive touchscreen display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, 3.5mm headphone jack, built-in speaker, microphone and kickstand. In addition, the Archos 48 measures in at 143.2 x 78.8 x 20 mm and weighs in at 286 grams.
The other difference between this model and the Archos 5 comes in with GPS — the Archos 48 does not have it. Of course, while that may be lacking the only option for internal storage is 500GB whereas the Archos 5 has options for 8GB, 16GB or 500GB. Still, even with the Archos 5 sporting an option for 500GB of storage, the $449.99 price tag is considerably higher than the $299.99 that you will have to shell out to purchase the Archos 48.
Bottom line, as long as you can live without the GPS and do not mind slightly older hardware specs and an already outdated version of Android — then $299.99 sounds good.
