Digital Storm Enix Gets Sandy Bridge And Heavy Overclocking

Slim Enix From Digital Storm Gets Tricked Out With Sandy Bridge and Factory Overclocking

Sometimes it’s the little design tweaks that no one might have thought of previously, those little “aha!” moments, that result in some really impressive leaps forward in hardware. The Enix from Digital Storm looks to do exactly that, plus bring in some extra performance as well.

Just the base unit on the Enix kicks off at a Core i3-2100 processor, four gigs of DDR3 RAM, a one gig GeForce GT220, a terabyte of hard drive storage and Windows 7 home premium. From there, you’ll have your choice of three other models with stats topping out at a Core i7 processor and eight gigs of RAM, as well as a pair of USB 3.0 ports for extra fast file transfers.

But it’s how they’ve got this set up that lets it achieve some thoroughly impressive processor speeds: 4.7 GHz at last report. See, how they put this together is, they’ve basically taken the motherboard and rotated it 90 degrees, taking advantage of the elemental property that heat rises. Thus, with more room for heat to rise, you’ve got better heat diffusion, which in turn lets them pack more power into the already pretty slim desktop without having to worry about something bursting into flame.

It’s actually an idea that probably should have happened before now–I’ve seen computers running water coolant, running “liquid” coolant, running with multiple fans, but I’ve never actually seen this kind of strange “smokestack” concept in which heat gets some help from its own natural propensities to diffuse away from your valuable components.

Maybe we’ll see this kind of thing start showing up in more computers. Maybe not. But either way, the Digital Storm Enix is taking that particular ball and running with it pretty nicely, and you can get one of these yourself starting now for $1132, for starters–though the higher end and more custom pieces will clear the $2000 mark.
