Nintendo 3DS eStore Coming On Day One Through Firmware Update

Nintendo 3DS Is Getting eStore At Launch, But Not In Original Firmware

Although rumors were flying that the Nintendo 3DS’ Internet browser and digital store, imaginatively titled eStore, a trademark I am frankly amazed Nintendo was able to get, wasn’t going to make it for the launch, it turns out they were false. Sort of. You see, the firmware coming with the initial units won’t have the eStore included, but it will be updated immediately after launch. Anyone who’s ever owned a PSP Go and went through the hour-long updates has just winced hard enough to make their shoulders hurt.

Seems Nintendo is capable of making some good decisions as well, since despite record lifetime DS sales overall and a general feeling the 3DS will enjoy brisk sales as well, the unprecedented region locking and huge European price have put a damper on things. Seems the eStore will be the place to download everything from demos to trailers and Gameboy Classics. A sort of Xbox Live, if you will, though Nintendo surely wouldn’t appreciate the comparison.
