Apple's App Store Closes In On 10 Billion Downloads, Announces $10,000 Contest

In Celebration Of 10 Billion Downloaded Apps, Apple Offers $10,000 To One Lucky Downloader

The App Store is closing in on a rather large milestone — 10 billion downloads and as a celebration Apple is offering a rather nice prize to one person who downloads an app before the 10 billion mark is reached.

That said, there is no telling how soon the 10 billion mark will come, however after spending a few minutes being mesmerized by how fast the counter seems to be running one would guess that it will arrive relatively soon. Anyway, the contest is rather simple — be the lucky person that downloads something before the 10 billionth app mark is reached and you could win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. According to the details posted over on the Apple website;

“As of today, nearly 10 billion apps have been downloaded from the App Store worldwide. Which is almost as amazing as the apps themselves. So we want to say thanks. Download the 10 billionth app, and you could win a US $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. Just visit the App Store, and download what could be your best app yet.”

And just for those trying to keep track, Apple hit the 1 billion mark back in April of 2009, the 2 billion mark in September of 2009 and the 3 billion mark in January of 2010. Going by that you can see just how quickly things are moving forward — it took just about 18 months to reach 3 billion and now only a year later and we are seeing 10 billion. Sort of crazy. Of course, with all of the iOS devices currently in the hands of users I guess we should not be all that surprised.

Lastly, for those hoping to get lucky and claim that $10,000 prize, you can enter up to 25 times per day and you can enter by heading to the App Store and downloading an app or by visting the Apple website and submitting an entry for free. With that, here is to hoping that the lucky winner is a TFTS reader. Wow, $10,000 to spend on apps — at $1 or $2 or even $5 or $10 — can you imagine how long that would last.
