Skype Sets New Record: 27 Million Simultaneous Users
If you’re a Skype user, then you’re in good company. Actually, you’re in good-sized company too; seems that Skype’s got its collective party hat on following the discovery that they’d recently broken a record, and hosted 27 million users at the same time.
Okay, okay…so it’s no World of Warcraft. But still, for them, it’s a big deal. The company discovered that it had hosted a record-breaking 27 million users, and attributed the recent success to a couple of different factors, including their recent acquisition of Qik and their recent moves to add video calling software for iOS and Verizon, among others.
Skype’s CEO, Tony Bates, went on to further reveal interesting trivia about Skype’s operations, including that they were putting out fully 520 million minutes of voice traffic per day (further interesting fact: that actually boils down into just south of a year’s worth of time every day at about 361 days), as well as that Skype’s video chat app saw four million downloads in the first 24 hours as well as a resulting one million video calls.
Skype didn’t stop the news wagon with its broken records, either–they also put out some information about where they’re looking to go, like to televisions, cars, and even nurseries as they work toward baby monitors. Not too much was said about Skype’s recent catastrophic outage, though, which was probably for the best. At least, it was probably for the best for Skype, as they’d rather we forget all about it.
Still, Skype’s looking like it’s in pretty good shape, in all honesty; not only are they getting some really good responses in their user base (outages notwithstanding, of course), they’re also looking to do a whole lot in the way of expansion. And, as so many have said before, if you’re not growing, you’re dying. Skype, meanwhile, certainly does not look like it’s dying.
