Apple Follows AT&T Lead, Lowers 8GB iPhone 3GS Pricing Down To $49
Coming more as an expected move then a surprise, Apple has followed in the path of AT&T and lowered the pricing for the 8GB iPhone 3GS. Of course, this move comes with plenty of speculation given the expected Verizon announcement, however it could be something simpler — an effort to clear out some older inventory.

Anyway, the price of the 8GB iPhone 3GS is now $49 with both Apple and AT&T. Of course, that is $49 with a two-year agreement, but needing a contract in order to get that price should not come as any real surprise. Otherwise, the handset, as it has been is available in black and at the present time is noted as being able to ship within 24 hours. And for those ordering with Apple, you can opt to order online and have it shipped to a local Apple retail store or your home. Not to mention, you could always simply visit an Apple retail store.
And for those thinking this is an older model. Well, truth be told it is, but at the same time it is running iOS 4 and still a more than capable device. Heck, for that matter some may prefer the design of this handset over the iPhone 4. Personally, I like the iPhone 4 design, but still like the look of this model slightly better.
As for that speculation, there is the tie in with the expected Verizon announcement, which some are saying that AT&T dropped this price to attract as many new buyers (and contracts) as they could before January 11th — aka Verizon iPhone day. That said, if you ask me I am thinking this is just a case of an older model, one that both Apple and AT&T likely want to sell out of at this point. Furthermore, if AT&T really wanted to draw some buyers before the Verizon announcement they would have cut the price of the iPhone 4 by a few bucks.
