Lord Of The Rings Online Triples Revenue Through Free To Play

LOTRO Free To Play Bringing In Thrice The Cash, According To Turbine

We just recently started playing Lord Of The Rings Online, even though it’s been out since we were in college. Why? Why else? The lack of subscription fees, like everyone else. Not that LOTRO didn’t deserve to have five sorts of crap played out of it back when it charged for the privilege, but the big B and their big WOW have pretty much made it impossible to justify spending money on any other MMO.

Just popping your head in to have a taste of the atmosphere once the floodgates were open and only paying when you saw something you really liked was an idea players relished, at least according to Turbine’s Adam Mersky, who says “This year – it’s still early, it’s only been a couple of months – monthly revenue has tripled for us.” “We are super-pleased with how so many of our players have responded fantastically,” Kate Paiz, the executive producer added. “We’re getting so many new players in and the world feels alive and vibrant.” Apparently making an MMo is a viable business decision again. Who knew?
