CES 2011: Skype Buys Qik For & Their Compression Algorhithm For $100 Million
Word is coming down that Skype has acquired video calling startup Qik for their GI Joe collection and list of Jack Bauer jokes that are actually recycled Chuck Norris jokes. Well, no, it’s apparently for their compression algorhithms and also their recording, sharing and storing capabilities. We liked our reason better.
Qik will be giving up its Smart Streaming service and for the reported $100 million it took for the deal to go through it will be giving it up hard, since Skype has found plenty of wiggle room in Verizon’s outstretched LTE bandwidth and they’re planning on making the best of it, as well as getting their video calling on with Nvidia, which is currently producing plenty of hardware for use with Android, so it’s doing what it can to help things along. It just warms our heart to see all these corporations cooperating with no ulterior motives whatsoever.
