CES 2011: Razer Shows Offer the Chimaera Headset
Razer’s been just jammed full of news these last few days, and here’s one more great item emerging and being shown off out at the 2011 CES show–the Razer Chimaera headset. The spelling may be bizarre on this one, but the headset itself should be sufficiently impressive to make up for the lunacy.
The big deal about the Razer Chimaera, aside from its crazy spelling, is that it’s not for PC like so many of Razer’s products tend to be, but this is one for those of us who favor the Xbox 360. It’s a 5.1 channel surround sound headset, which is exciting enough, but it also comes with a docking station for a battery that can recharge internally. It’s also packing a noise isolating microphone so that the sound around you doesn’t bleed over. Because as gamers out there all know, the last thing your Call of Duty 4 fire team needs to hear when you’re out on a missing is “Can you go take the garbage out?” from your wife, girlfriend, or even mother.
That wonderful noise-isolating microphone flips up when not in use, and the headset proper even comes with its own EQ systems and audio output jacks so that you can hook up another set of headphones to it.
Of course, headphones offering surround sound and then some seldom come cheap, and these will prove no exception–the 5.1 channel Razer Chimaeras will sell at $199.99. But for the budget minded, there will be a 2.1 channel version (more like a sound bar than a surround sound system) selling at $149.99.
So if you’re looking for a big new headset and don’t mind a big new price tag to go with it, you might want a closer look at Razer’s Chimaera system when they show up–Razer says they’re ready to start shipping these, so your aural gaming fun can begin directly.

A Chimaera is a type of fish, where as a chimera is a mythological creature. The spelling is fine. Still pronounced the same.
