Keeping true to their word, the guys behind Wii Homebrew, calling themselves Fail0verflow, have presented their method of making the industry’s most secure console give up the goods in painstaking detail. It’s pretty much official by now, the era of PS3 piracy, custom firmwares and unsigned code is upon us, although that’s apparently not the creators’ intention.
Speaking at the 27th Chaos Communication Conference (27c3), which contrary to its naming scheme is not a supervillain convention, the team expanded on the means they’ve used to circumvent the lauded on-die security features of the PS3′s Cell chip and especially on exactly how useless the Hypervisor technology that’s supposed to block the running of unsigned code is. The answer: so useless. But what probably took the biggest beating was Sony’s ego, as the guys made it clear that the main reason hackers have just recently mobilized to make this happen was the reversal of Sony’s policy on letting users install Linux on their PS3′s. However, four pristine years posting up those sales numbers have to count for something right?
