Lexar Media Shows Off 64 And 128 Gig SDXC Cards

Hefty Storage Comes Out Of Lexar Media--Most Still Waiting For Two Terabyte Cards

This one’s probably more for the profession video folks out there who are looking for a way to put a whole lot of room at their fingertips, because Lexar Media has just wheeled out a pair of new SDXC cards, offering 64 and 128 gig of storage.

This announcement doubles most common upper-level SDXC cards’ storage capacities, and offers transfer speeds around twenty meg per second, and they’ll even ship with a limited lifetime warranty, a move I’ve always found personally agreeable. It’s far from wrong to stand behind a product.

Sure, objectively, this is a pretty big deal. After all, many people are running on desktop computers that only offer two to four times that amount of storage, depending on which number you look at. But considering that, two years ago, we were getting forecasts of two terabyte cards a year after the forecasts were made, it’s not too hard to be disappointed.

But any disappointment about not having the projected size cards available by now should really be tempered by the fact that it’s a moot point anyway. That and that “two terabyte” figure seems to be something of a theoretical maximum, so it really shouldn’t be much of a surprise that the theoretical maximum is proving elusive.

What’s worse, most devices simply couldn’t use the new cards anyway, as they have slots for SD and SDHC cards, but not the SDXC cards. Those devices that can will likely be expensive and mostly in the hands of professionals who would be able to deduct them from their taxes as professional equipment.

And considering that the SDXC cards look to retail for $399.99 for the 64 gig size and a whopping $699.99 for the 128, with an eye to hit later this quarter, it’s safe to say that most people won’t be lining up for these any time soon.
