CNN Names iPhone 4 'Antennagate' As Biggest Tech Fail Of 2010
The book is closed on 2010 now, and CNN’s Doug Gross compiled a list of what he believes are the biggest “tech fails” of 2010. What’s at #1? The iPhone’s “Antennagate” issues. The latest iPhone was launched to critical acclaim, and the usual waiting lines that you’ll find outside an Apple store during an Apple product launch. But, a few months later, some users began having issues with their phone’s antenna. And that spurred the Antennagate issue.

Apple kind of made the problem worse by saying nothing, then saying that it’s a problem in the way that the signal bars are displayed, then saying that if it happens to you, you’re just in a low signal area, and try holding it differently. Despite all those lame responses, Apple eventually managed to silence the critics, or at least silence the conversation on the issue, when they announced they’ll give a free case to anybody who wants one. Problem solved! Now we’ll have to see if the next iPhone, expected out around in June/July, will have the same external antenna design that the iPhone 4 has.
Apple’s Ping is #10 on CNN’s list of “Tech Fails”. The Apple music-themed social networking service has yet to really catch on. And it also led to some drama between Facebook and Apple. Apple wanted Facebook interconnectivity. Facebook said no. Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg even allegedly met to discuss it. An agreement couldn’t be reached by the time of the announcement, so Apple went ahead using the publicly known APIs for Facebook integration. And, a few hours after launch of Ping – Facebook blocked Ping.
Here are CNN’s other “tech fails” for 2010:
- (As mentioned) iPhone 4′s Antennagate
- 3D TV
- Microsoft Kin
- Nexus One
- Facebook privacy
- Google Buzz
- Gawker Media hacked
- Content Farms
- Digg relaunch
- (As mentioned) Apple’s Ping
What do you think? Is that list right? Is the iPhone the biggest FAIL of the year?

I know this is old news (I was reading up on Antennagate) but #4 The Nexus One? On what grounds? Some people still prefer the One over the S. It brought in the wave of Smartphones worth having. Yeah, it’s old and mostly worthless now, but unless I’m missing something it wasn’t a “tech fail”
The Nexus One had major 3G connectivity issues at launch, back in early 2009. None of the parties involved were really able to fix it at first. Google, HTC and T-Mobile all passed the blame around, and those issues certainly affected the image of the Nexus One. Furthermore, carriers were not really interested in the device, so it never had a chance to be turned into a best-selling handset.
