Nook2 To Be The Name Of The Next B&N Nook? [Barnes & Noble Spotted Trying To Trademark The Name "NOOK2", Looks Like We Have A Name For Their Next eReader/Tablet]

While Nook sales haven’t topped the Kindle Store’s sales yet, I think everybody would have to admit that the Nook line has been a success for Barnes & Noble, specially the NookColor which is basically an Android tablet that when rooted, lets you read Nook and Kindle books, making it one of the best things for power readers who don’t want to pick sides. Now, we’ve gotten a glimpse at what Barnes & Noble will be doing next. Barnes & Noble trademarked the term “Nook2″ along with several other Nook-related names.

Obviously, the “Nook2” would be a second-gen eReader. After the success of the NookColor, I would be surprised not to see them go back to another tablet/eReader hybrid (as opposed to the first Nook, where just the bottom bit was Android powered). But, all that tablet color touchscreen goodness just adds complexity and price, so it’s possible that we’ll see them go back to basics for a “Nook2″, sort of like Amazon did with the Kindle, Kindle 2 and Kindle DX.

Other phrases and names trademarked by Barnes & Noble include “Nook Cook” which they describe as an app that shares cooking information. “Nook Smart” is another new phrase that’s been trademarked, and Pocketnow believes that will be related to the current Nook Study platform, which gives students access to a massive collection of educational textbooks.

Nook Kids” is an interesting one. The submitted description, according to PocketNow, is the same description they submitted for the Nook2. Does this mean that Nook Kids will be a Nook for younger readers? Some in the tech blog circle seem to believe that it’ll be an app or a service, not a new piece of hardware.

Nooksellers” is the final trademark, and it seems to be some sort of social networking site focused around Nookbooks. It’s a website that providers book recommendations based on your social network and preferences in books – so, could be something new for Nook fans.

Sounds like the folks at Barnes & Noble have got a lot up their sleeves in the new year.
