Skype App For iOS Updated To Version 3.0, Brings Video Calling

Just the other day we saw the how-to on the Skype website that suggested the iPhone was going to get video calling. And well, it looks like that is one rumor that has come true. The new video calling support has arrived in version 3.0 and while the benefits are nicer for the iPhone and news iPod touch, there is also something for those sporting an iPad as well as the third-gen iPod touch.

First up, the latest update brings the Skype app up to version 3.0 and the video calling requires iOS 4.0 or later. The noes features that you can expect to find in Skype version 3.0 include;

• Make Skype to Skype video calls on WiFi and 3G
• Call Skype desktop users (Mac OS X or Windows) and other iPhone users
• Two-way video calls supported on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS and iPod touch 4th gen

Furthermore, the video calls will support both portrait and landscape modes. And as for what those on the iPad and older (non-camera having) iPod touch models will get — both of those will be able to receive video only. In other words, you can still get in on the video calling action, however the person on the other end of your call will not be seeing you. Of course, given the lack of camera that seems all but obvious. Still, it is nice to see that there is at least one-way support there.

Just like that, the rumors of an iPad 2 with a front-facing camera probably seem all that more important to some as of now. I guess that is another thing we can add to our wish list of things we would like to see come true in 2011. In the meantime, while the video calling part has come true, however that earlier post also mentioned the Verizon iPhone — and as you likely realize — that has not yet come true.
