HP Envy 13 Just $999 After Instant Rebate [HP Cuts Price Of Their Ultrathin Laptop, Takes $450 Off The Price, Clearing Out Stock Before CES Unveil Next Week?]

Remember the HP Envy? Like the Dell Adamo, it was the PC industry’s response to the MacBook Air. With Apple coming out with a new MacBook Air this year, I expect we’ll see a plethora of new ultra-thin PCs at CES next week. So, with HP cutting some $450 off the price of the expensive HP Envy 13, are they cutting prices of the laptop in order to clear out stock of the laptop before they introduce new exciting models?

Despite the Envy 13 getting some fanfare when it was announced, it really hasn’t been regularly refreshed by HP, leading us to believe that sales of the laptop weren’t what HP wanted. As CNET notes, the Envy 13 shouldn’t be confused with the HP Envy 14, which is actually a popular line of laptop and refreshed by HP quite often.

Here’s what you’ll get for $999 for the HP Envy 13:

  • 13-inch display, 0.8 inches thick
  • Intel Core 2 Duo SL9300 1.6GHz
  • 3GB RAM
  • AMD Radeon HD 4330 GPU (512MB VRAM)
  • 250GB Hard Drive
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • External DVD drive included

Not a bad machine, although like the Dell Adamo and MacBook Air, the price is awful (even with a $450 discount) and you’re paying a big premium on “thin”.

Unless you’re somebody who has to have the Apple logo on the back of your computer, the Windows ultra-thin laptops are compelling rivals to the MacBook Air. Apple has paved a new road by going with solid-state drives only in the new MacBook Airs, though, which greatly improves performance. Expect all the ultra-thins at CES next week to have SSDs as the PC manufacturers push to compete with Apple.
