Palm webOS App Catalog Reaches The 5,000 Available App Milestone

Palm App Catalog Finally Crosses The 5,000 App Mark, Takes More Than A Year To Do So

It looks like we have some news on the amount of apps that are available in the App Catalog for webOS devices. And sadly, while this number is a nice milestone, it seems to have taken Palm quite a while to achieve it and it has arrived at a time when a much newer platform has reached the same level.

First things first, the webOS App Catalog has officially crossed the 5,000 available app milestone. Sounds good and that could be cause for celebration, but. Yes, there is a but and it seems the Palm milestone has arrived just about the same time as the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has reached the same.

And for those who may have forgotten, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is just about 2 months old and the Palm webOS App Catalog is more than a year old. Suddenly the webOS 5,000 app milestone does not sound so impressive anymore. Needless to say they are both way behind iOS and Android who are sitting at around 300,000 (as of October 2010) and 200,000 respectively.

Then again, how many apps do we really need. Sure, more is always the better option because that means we have more options and more to choose from, but at the same time — 5,000 is still fairly impressive and means that most of the big players can be found. Of course, this comes from someone who is a self-admitted Palm fan and webOS user so maybe my rationalization is nothing more than trying to put a positive spin on Palm.

Then again, to show that I am more than just a Palm fanboy, even as someone who wants webOS to succeed, I will freely admit that the amount of apps as well as the devices need a real kick soon. And by soon, I mean we need to see more apps come available and more devices be released. And no, while the Palm Pre 2 is a nice looking device, that is nothing more than a stepping stone for Palm and hardly counts in my opinion.
