Galaxy S Upgraded To Froyo In The UK
Gee, thanks Samsung. It’s well known that the Google Nexus S is a close cousin of the Samsung Galaxy S, but many Galaxy S owners were wondering why the Nexus S was shipping with Android 2.3 Gingerbread while the Galaxy S had yet to be officially updated to Android 2.2 “Froyo”. In fact, some enterprising modders even unofficially ported Gingerbread to the Galaxy S. Well, better late than never – Samsung has officially updated UK Galaxy S phones to Android 2.2 Froyo.

The announcement was made via Samsung UK’s official Twitter feed. They Tweeted:
We have some good news for the festive season; 2.2 is now available for the Galaxy S on all networks.
The Tweet then goes on to link to a page on the Samsung site that just hosts a manual for the Galaxy S, updated with Froyo information, as well as the Galaxy S quick start guide. All-in-all, nothing really important nor anything that will tell you when your Galaxy S will be given the update.
Of course, part of the reason we’re seeing such a delay in Android updates is, A – the manufacturers have to update their own custom user interfaces to the new software and; B – the networks feel compelled to test the Android update themselves. This is why many find the Nexus One and Nexus S so appealing, as the unlocked phones receive the updates usually very quickly. The Nexus One has yet to get Android 2.3, which is frustrating some.
As mentioned though, this late Froyo update for the Galaxy S is better than never. Any UK Galaxy S users seen the update yet?

On orange uk….. updated two days ago phone is faster few animation tweaks not bad at all….at last flash…i downloaded kies from samsung 1.51 even though I had 1.53 on my computer…..but as I said everything works still rubbish gps though
Uk galaxy users actually received froyo 2.2 at the begining of october (the first galaxy users in the world to receive it)
It was just the unfortunate folks on the orange network who had to wait until now and that was orange’s fault not samsung’s. In fact samsung gave us in the uk 2.2.1 update to froyo on xmas eve. Again the first in the world to get it.
I’m on Orange UK and still CANNOT update from 2.1 to Froyo 2.2 via Kies. Phone is an unbranded and unlocked SGS yet has a product code seemingly restricted to ORA (Orange UK). It appears this is preventing me from upgrading and affects a fair few Orange UK users from what I gather.
The whole upgrade debacle has made me decide to steer clear of Samsung mobile products, a factor key to my ‘shall I buy a Galaxy Tab or Ipad?’ debate!
On Orange. Finally managed to upgrade to Froyo yesterday after installing Kies 2.0 on three computers – third time ‘lucky’! Many hours lost. Not a huge difference between 2.1-update and 2.2. I wish Galaxt S did not suffer from the ‘lag’. Potentially a very quick and smooth phone without this bad filing system they have apparently used for apps. Cannot flash as it seems to be locked, but shouldn’t have to – product should just work. Did not buy iPhone as I didn’t want to spend £35 pm for ‘unlimited’ everything – so saving a significant amount pm.
