Microsoft Releases Apps For iPhone and Android, But No WP7
This is an odd story. Bing (the Microsoft-owned search engine) recently released three apps for the iPhone and Android. Two free games for the iPhone, and a free music streaming app for Android. And nothing for Windows Phone 7. That’s right, Bing left out Windows Phone 7 in their recent free app giveaway, and some WP7 fans are upset that Microsoft has forgotten their own platform.

Who knew Bing was in the app development business? They say that making mobile apps is very lucrative and, well, I won’t judge if Microsoft needs the money. They released “Snowboard Hero by Bing” and “Powerboat Challenge by Bing” two games for the iPhone, that, as you can imagine, involve snowboarding and driving a boat. They also released “Holiday 100 by Bing”, which lets you stream holiday music, including album art, to you Android device. They’re offering it through January 2nd and they don’t say if it’s free or requires a Zune pass or something.
As you can imagine, the outcry from the Windows Phone 7 users started immediately. Right away, the blog post announcing these on the official Bing blog started filling up with angry WP7 users. One guy wrote:
This is sad, I use Windows [Phone] 7 and have to wait for the apple fanboys to get toys before I do from the company that made the OS for my phone?
Eventually, the Bing team heard their cries of annoyance and wrote:
We hear your feedback loud and clear. Please stay tuned for more updates from us on WP7.
Part of the humor/horror in this story is that very few companies ‘eat their own dogfood’ like Microsoft. Allegedly, Steve Ballmer gets mad if he sees an iPhone in use at the Microsoft campus, and doesn’t let his kids use Google. Melinda Gates said that her kids want iPads, but her and Bill won’t let one cross the threshold. But now, Bing is releasing apps for Android and iOS with no compatible app for WP7? You’ve got to imagine that Mr. Ballmer’s office was calling down to the Bing office after this story hit the tech blog circuit.
