As you already know, and we have kept you thoroughly informed on iOS jailbreak and unlock procedures, iOS 4.2.1, the last iOS version out there, has been properly jailbroken and unlocked after it became official. But both procedures are not yet perfected and require further tinkering.
While the jailbreak tools available in the wild will free the iPhone from its shackles, we’re not looking at untethered jailbreaking for iOS devices so that’s why the jailbreak process still needs to be perfected. As for the unlock tool, that only deals with older basebands and new iPhone 4 units with newer basebands will not get the unlock treatment just yet.
Getting back to the untethered jailbreak process, we find out today that the iPhone Dev Team will wear that Santa costume this Christmas and bring jailbreakers an untethered jailbreak method for the iPhone 4, iPod touch and iPad running iOS 4.2.1. MuscleNerd, as always, has confirmed it on Twitter:

Unlike previous times though MuscleNerd has deleted these particular tweet, but we won’t start to worry just yet. Sure the whole untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak thing might require a lot more work, as will the iPhone 4 unlock for new basebands, but we can still hope that in a few days the iPhone Dev Team will have a new jailbreak announcement for the crowds.
As for those iOS crowds out there, remember that any jailbreak and/or unlock tools you want to use are your disposal free of charge courtesy of the iPhone Dev Team, but we won’t endorse such procedures and you’ll be the only one responsible for whatever you put your iOS device through. Hi, I was just wondering if I JB 4.2.1 as tethered and do all I need to do on Cydia. When a Untethered is released will I have to restore and start again?
Out of curiousity, which base bands will be covered by the new release? Cause I’m sitting on an iOS 4.2.1 with baseband 5.15.04… the joys of accidently updating.
why are you waiting for this? you can already jailbreak ios 4.2 on any band and doesnt matter if its tetherd are not only diffrance is if its tethered to reboot u will need to use a program on you computer
This is only “fake about” application in cydia where you can change everything written in the “about” page of your iphone.. Fake!!!

its 11:30 pm on xmas eve and still no 4.2.1 release watch its gonna be another 3 weeks
to be honest i dont think either of these guys have a clue wtf there doing….tethered jb is as much use as tits on a fish.downgrade ur os and dont update…i put my hands up and say sorry if this jb ever comes out..but at this rate mr jobs will be 2 or 3 steps ahead on the upgrading os
End of January is here, but still no 4.2.1 release. :(
