Kenwood CLX-70 iPhone / iPod Dock Gets Shown Off
There are a great whopping lot of iPhone / iPod docks out there. It’s getting tougher with each passing day just to keep track of the various different models out there. But it’s always worth seeing when a fairly big name in the home audio circles (like Kenwood) steps up with its own iPod dock, and that’s exactly what we’ve got today with the Kenwood CLX-70.

The Kenwood CLX-70 offers up DTS Envelo Speakers, backed up by a 30 watt amp that provides a “three dimensional soundstage”. You’ll be able to use this with the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4, plus the iPod Touch, iPod Nano (second generation only) and the iPod classic. Interestingly, you’ll also be able to use this with a host of other devices, since the CLX-70 offers a 30-pin dock connector, USB port, SD card slot, and a CD slot that’s also MP3 compatible.
You’ll be able to get these in your choice of pink, white or black, and they weigh a surprising six pounds. They’ll only be available in Japan to start with–not surprising there–starting later on this month.
Pricing on this beast is as yet unclear, as is just when it’ll be making some moves in the broader markets, but one thing is clear–it’s going to be hard pressed to compete with all the other iPod docks out there. Sure, Kenwood’s a pretty good name when it comes to home audio, but there are so many competing brands out there (the TimeCommander comes quickly to mind–how can Kenwood hope to compete against an iPod dock that’ll turn your lights on and off for you? It’ll have to compete on either pricing or performance, and given the nature of the other iPod docks out there, I’m not sure Kenwood’s is going to be able to fight in that particular arena.
