Motorola Droid X Gingerbread Update Available Unofficially; Proceed at Own Risk!
As you already know there’s a new update for your beloved Motorola Droid X, but that’s not the Android 2.3 Gingerbread upgrade you started dreaming of but a simple, new Froyo version. However, if you want to install a custom Android ROM with a hint of Gingerbread, you can do so right away instead of waiting for Verizon to roll it out.

Naturally, before we hand you over the instructions we will tell you that you’re the only person responsible for whatever you put your Droid X through. Those of you not comfortable performing some of the steps mentioned above should keep away and wait for the real thing to come out later down the road.
The ROM you need is ApeX 1.3.0 for Droid X which comes with “2 parts AOSP, 1 part Blur, all ApeX (now with a hint of Gingerbread!)” and in order to install it you will need to upgrade to Android 2.3.320 or 2.3.340. You also have to be rooted and familiar with the Droid X bootstrap recovery tool. And here are the installation instructions:
Installation Instructions: Please have a nandroid of your current setup in case this is not for you
Users coming from 1.2.1 may be safe to keep data and cache. If there are problems, then factory reset. – Uninstall updates to Market, Google Voice Search, Google Search Bar, and Gmail if they’re there under Settings->Applications->Manage Applications first (1.2.1 upgraders only)
-Place file on your sdcard. Bootstrap recovery and reboot recovery
-Navigate to mounts and storage. FORMAT data, and cache
-Return to previous menu and install .zip from sd card
-Choose ApeX and install!OR
-Place file on sdcard. Install ROM from sdcard in ROM manager. Wipe data and cache.
If any of that sounds too complicated for you then you’re going to be better off running Android 2.2.1 on the Droid X and wait for Moto and Verizon to release the real and full Android 2.3 update. In case you do install this Apex 1.3.0 version on your Droid X, then do let us know how it all worked out for you.

I’m on it now. Works like a charm. Runs a bit hot though.
Wow, really working the search engines with this post. This isn’t unofficial, official or anything. It’s not Gingerbread. It’s simply a ROM made by a guy based off of the Droid X new 2.2.1 update. Hope you are ranking high for those “Droid X Gingerbread Update” search terms though!
its great… but i cant get flash player 10.1 to work…. i have no clue whats going on, and would be open to any suggestions….
BS! let’s see a screen of the phone info specifically the android version. I will bet a million billion $ it says 2.2.1, which is not 2.3 which is not gingerbread.
Bob you should read and understand before you make yourself look stupid. As always people who know the least speak first.
Good luck waiting for Motorola to release an update. They couldnt even provide Froyo to all of their Android phones yet! Not even to less than a year old Milestone models…
I will stay away from Motorola from now on.
Great rom, been using it for a while. Oc’d to 1.2ghz and runs cool and smooth. good features. You people dont even know waht your talking about. if you havent rooted and tried this rom you shouldnt even be posting here. I was running apex for 2.3.15 and it was great so when the new rom came out for 2.3.340 i decided to sbf to 2.3.320, upgrade to 2.3.340 and try the new rom. was well worth it. my droid is working the best it ever has. i think im gonna try lexington lite 1.0 cuz drewgaren is the man and the rom looks real good. the “gingerbread features” arent really all that special. cool icons……..
The new CM7 came out for certain models and its great even though its not officially released. I was wondering if it worked on the DX. I’ve got it for my D1 and its smooth and amazing.
Do I have to unroot to get the update
