Mass Effect 3 Story Tipped By Accidental Store Listing

EA Store Lists Mass Effect 3 Early, Story May Involve Earth, Pulled In 20 Minutes By EA Web Staff

Stop! Don’t read anymore if you don’t want to be exposed to any bits of story of the third and final entry into the Mass Effect saga. Still with me? The online EA Store accidentally posted the store listing for Mass Effect 3 early. The game is believed to be announced tomorrow at the Spike VGA Awards, and it looks like somebody on the web staff wanted to get their work done early on a Friday night.

Here’s the description of the game from the web listings:

Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.

Earth is burning! It seems that the final episode in the Mass Effect series (at least the “main” series) will take the action to Earth, which was pretty much missing for most of the game, save for a mission on the moon in the first game. The game also identifies Shepard as an “Alliance Marine”, which is further proof that if you aren’t playing the Mass Effect games as a solider, you’re doing it wrong.

Mass Effect 3 was listed on the EA store for both PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, with no release date and a $59.99 price for all three games (causing much outrage for PC gamers, as you can imagine). They were up for about 20 minutes before getting yanked down by the webstaff. Appearantly, everybody was too busy drooling to attempt to pre-order it. I can’t find any stories of anybody, from the writers at Joystiq to their commentators actually trying to hit the pre-order button while the listings were live. Regardless, I imagine that the orders were cancelled if any managed to get through.
