Motorola Droid X Android 2.3.340 (Gingerbread?) Update Hitting Soon?
The Motorola Droid X is definitely the kind of smartphone that will be compatible with the upcoming Android 2.3 Gingerbread update, but then again all hot Android devices we’ve seen this year will be upgraded to Gingerbread in the near/distant future. The problem is, naturally, that there’s some waiting involved as these Android updates are never coming as soon as you imagine.

The Droid X will indeed get a new update from the mothership, and by that I surely mean Verizon and there’s a PDF file to confirm that. What’s weird about the update is it’s codename: 2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.USIBP_C_01.09.07P) which would make users think they’re looking at a speedy Android 2.3 Gingerbread version for the Droid X.
But that’s not the case, and, even if Verizon is going to offer the new firmware in the very near future, we’re still looking at good old Froyo here. In fact here’s what you can expect from this particular update here:
Enhancements:
+ Preloaded Madden NFL football game.
+ Preloaded Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1.
+ Preloaded MyVerizon application (v5).
+ Added Data Widget to home panel.
+ Improved Android™ OS Froyo stability.Improvements:
+ Improvements to Microsoft® Exchange ActiveSync®:
• Enhancements to corporate email sync and push stop.
• PIN lock timeout now follows the server’s settings.
• Enhancements to SMTP authentication.
+ Improvements to Visual Voice Mail:
• “Failed delivery to” message displays correctly when
messages can’t be sent.
• Audio routes correctly to speaker, even when connected
to a mono Bluetooth® headset.
+ Other improvements:
• Device now supports MP3 media files after MR2 update.
• Music Play now runs smoothly and without lock-ups.
• Weather widget stays with assigned location updates, not
current location.
• “Smart Profile: Face Down” feature will not permanently
disable the phone’s ringer.
• Enhanced audio sync when playing high quality WMV videos.
• Improved video playback.
• Clearer colors assigned to soft keys in applications such as
Google Maps.
• In the Contacts widget, keyboard now appears when using
“type to search.”
• Eliminated camera “Force Close” errors.
• Device lock remains, even after a long, hard key press.
• Quicker wake-up of display when on a call.
We’ll be on the look out for the actual Droid X Gingerbread update so stick around for more news!

No one ever claimed this was a Gingerbread update. The SDK was just released today, it will be weeks before the Nexus One gets it, and months before any other phones do. The Droid X is getting a maintenance update. The 2.3 is a Verizon concoction, it is still OS version 2.2, but it will be 2.2.1. I don’t get how you, as a tech blog, don’t know that
@Lola, where did you not see me specify that:
Im excited. This update will basically, hopefully, fix all the problems I have from updating to Froyo. I can wait for gingerbread… it gives me something to look forward to.
Let hope gingerbread release with no let downs like froyo. That crap did a number on meany phones and hope it dosnt happen again. I talking to a VZW rep last week and told me the update was getting pushed within two weeks. I asked him if it was 3.0 or gingerbread and the guy didnt know. But all he could say was within two week time frame which is set for around the xmas time. Lets keep are fingers crossed lol. But either way when the new flagship phone comes out ill be picking one up just gotta have the new ya know!
Hey,
Do you know the official date for Anddroid 2.3 on the Droid X?
The 2.3.340 for Droid X hit my phone last night — 12/12/2010 about 21:00 CST.
If I don’t want to upgrade to 2.3.340, how do I get rid of the notification that keeps popping up every hour asking me to install or ask later?
This update sucks. Shortly after I updated I lost all of my photos.
Mine just arrived and took all of about a minute to power down, back up and install. Hope it won’t mess with rooting it……
Adobe Flash showcase locked up at 90% download on opening already installed app….this is the first thing I did and it is frozen already….I’d say it sucks since it never happened before….so much for improving the system!!
Lola sounds like a d-bag.
This is horrible news. Why would verizon even entertain the idea of doing a bloatware update instead of diverting that energy into getting us gingerbread?! WTF?! Whose in charge over there Bizaro? “ME BIZARO GIVE YOU BIZARO WORLD UPDATE AND FORGET REAL UPDATE, BECAUSE ME BIZARO KNOW YOU EVEN MORE STUPID AND WILL PAY HUNDREDS MORE!”
Verizon is always, always as a tradition and without fail EXAGGERATEDLY late with their smartphone updates.
Thank you Chris Smith, very few tech bloggers are standing up. Please be a little more angry and viscous. Thanks!
I don’t see how that ‘specifies’ anything. Especially since
specify |ˈspesəˌfī|
verb ( -fies, -fied) [ trans. ]
identify clearly and definitely
Done.
