Samsung Nexus S Potential NFC Chip Gets Official

Samsung Announces Near Field Communication Chip; New Android Gingerbread Handsets to Get It Soon?

Remember Web 2.0 Summit? The event was expected to host to public release of Android 2.3 Gingerbread but instead Eric Schmidt unveiled an unreleased yet Android device, the Samsung Nexus S, and told us that Gingerbread is coming in a few weeks and among its upcoming features it will offer us NFC (near field communication) capabilities.

Well it looks like today Samsung came forward with its own NFC chip, which was properly announced with a press release and all.

Samsung NFC chip is probably going to be used in the Samsung Nexus S but quite possibly in other Android, and not only, smartphone ins the near future comes with embedded flash memory.

What is NFC you ask? We have explained it in the past, but here’s a quick recap of what NFC will do for you:

NFC is a short-range (up to 10cm or 4inches), high frequency wireless communication technology which allows devices such as smart phones to collect or transmit data to another NFC-enabled device without manual configuration to identify devices. In addition, NFC chip can play a role as a contactless smartcard in use for public transportation payments for bus and subway fares and mobile banking payments. It can also read RFID tags in retail stores or on outdoor billboards for convenient on-the-spot data access.

The smarter our smartphones become, the more important a role they will play in our busy lives so such technologies are definitely going to be explored on in the near future. The Samsung NFC chip announced today is apparently the first in the world to come with flash “for the embedded memory” and will go to mass production in the first quarter of 2011. This chip is said to have minimal power consumption when in use and stand-by and the chip will remain active for mobile payments even when the battery of your phone is dead.

We’ll probably have more details about Android’s NFC capabilities in the future, and we’re definitely interested to see whether the Samsung Nexus S will have this particular NFC chip on board or not.

While the Samsung NFC chip, and indeed the Nexus S phone may have a full implementation of the NFC spec, Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) will only feature the ability to Read (aka scan) NFC tags, so applications that allow for data to be transmitted, like handset to handset (peer to peer) data exchange will not immediately be possible.
