Asus Shows Off Specs For the U36 Notebook

Asus' U36 Is Highly Portable and Packs an Intel Core i3 or i5 Punch

New laptops are great to read about, folks–speaking as someone who spends plenty of time away from home with his laptop in tow, there’s a lot to like about these tiny computers. And when Asus shows off a new one, it’s time to pay attention.

Asus, ranked in the same league as Apple in terms of reliability and customer service (though frankly, my Dell hardware is doing spectacularly after years of heavy use, so pardon me if I take a bit of issue with the linked report), showed off its new laptop out in the Taiwan area to start with, and we even have specs on it, so we’ll segue right in.

The Asus U36 is reportedly looking to offer up a 13.3 inch LED monitor, your choice of Intel Core i3 or i5 (more specifically the Intel Core i5-460M) processors, Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics with a full gig of memory, two gigs of memory, a 500 gig hard drive, HDMI, a USB 3.0 port, a four-cell battery that’ll give it fully 10 hours of operation, and it’ll even run Windows 7 Home Premium.

Of course, there’s probably plenty more we just haven’t heard of, like Wi-Fi connectivity and the like, but still, this is a pretty nicely featured laptop in its own right. Maybe the hard drive is a bit on the smallish side–terabyte drives are the current top–but it’s well within tolerance, and same goes for the processor (why stop at i5 and not offer i7?)

No word yet on wider release dates yet, though there is some pricing data that suggests that this will max out around $1375, which is almost certain to get discounted in rapid fashion (it’s good, but it’s not that good, not unless it offers up a whole lot of other features as yet unrevealed) before it reaches maximum market-point saturation.
