iPhone 4 Baseband 2.10.04 & Baseband 3.10.01 Unlock Still Pending
For the last couple of days we told you pretty much everything there was to tell about the iOS 4.2.1 unlock tools released by the iPhone Dev Team. Besides Ultrasn0w 1.2, the updated unlock tool for iOS 4.2.1, there also are new jailbreak tools meant to help you change your iPhone 3G and 3GS regular basebands to iPad baseband 6.15.00 which is basically the required trick to enable the subsequent unlock.

But iPhone 4 owners, especially those of you that happen to have handsets with new basebands such as 2.10.04 or 3.10.01, well, we have no good news for you yet. Although, when you come to think of it, the fact that the iPhone Dev Team is working on the iPhone 4 unlock is good news in itself since that means Apple hasn’t figured out a way to prevent hackers from unlocking their new handsets.
In a recent post meant to address various jailbreak and unlock issues spotted by iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users (the one we already showed you earlier here on TFTS) famous Sherif Hashim said, while congratulating the iPhone Dev Team for making the new unlock possible, that “hopefully the iPhone 4 on 2.10.04 and 3.10.01 follows within a good time table.”
This, combined with an earlier tweet from MuscleNerd that said that “@sherif_hashim has provided very nice crashes for i4 BB, which we can explore more starting Monday :)” can only lead us to believe the iPhone 4 unlock, no matter how difficult it will be to pull off, is also coming at some point in the near future.
MuscleNerd has not specified a timeframe for the unlock of iPhone 4 on iOS 4.2.1 with baseband 2.10.04 or 3.10.01, so in case you plan to purchase an iPhone 4 in order to unlock it and use it on a different network, you might want to hold on to that thought for a while longer, just so you don’t get stuck with another expensive iPod that doesn’t make any calls yet.
At the same time, considering that the new unlock works on so many devices against Apple’s best efforts to prevent it, we can’t but wonder what actions will Cupertino take in order to stop iOS 4.2.1 unlocks in the future. We might have the answer to that question sooner than expected since Apple is said to launch iOS 4.3 really soon and with every new iOS launch we expect Apple to try to fend off any jailbreaks and unlocks.
