I know, you’re reading that headline and thinking it must be some kind of typo, but I can assure you that that’s not the case. In fact, it’s quite true–the Cabasse L’Ocean speakers achieve a whopping 117 decibels of sound and utterly without distortion. Special fun fact for comparison’s sake: a jet engine from 100 feet away puts out 135 decibels.

The L’Ocean speakers feature the exact same 3-way coaxial drive unit as their earlier release (and their flagship release as well), the La Sphere. They represent a collaborative effort between Cabasse and its surprising parent company, Canon, who threw in some knowhow on digital signal processing (and that’s scarcely a surprise–who better to handle digital signal processing than a camera company?).

The specs on the L’Ocean are almost as outlandish, and yet true, as their sound output claims. They stand about four feet high and weigh around 176 pounds, making them about as large as the typical fifth grader you’d see on Maury in the afternoons, and each speaker puts out a whopping 2,250 watts of power, with 250 watts to the tweeter alone. The woofer, meanwhile, takes 1000 watts.

And that’s not where the features end, either–there’s digital amplification, a proprietary system that automatically adjusts power levels based on the acoustics of the room they’re in (dubbed, not surprisingly, the Cabasse Room Compensation System), and–get this–a “phase linear digital filter” to create what’s being described as  “a true point source system”.

It may well be the most outlandish set of speakers seen by man, at least currently. And it will be priced accordingly. How much will you pay for these speakers? Try 80,000 euros (right around $105,000 US).

And if you start saving your pennies–and sell your house–you might be able to afford them by the time they show up in the second quarter of next year.
