Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 Android 2.1 to Hit Soon; Who Needs Gingerbread

All Three Sony Ericsson Xperia X8 Owners to Play With Android 2.1 Soon Provided They Have Been Nice

There’s a reason for which Sony Ericsson isn’t doing that good when it comes to launching competing smartphones that could stand a chance in front of the iPhone and all its other Android rivals. Sony didn’t really adapt to the modern times and although it has some very interesting handsets in the wild it still fails tremendously to letting their consumers make the most of them.

Naturally I am talking about the Xperia X10 family and the Xperia X8. While the X10 has been updated to Android 2.1 the X8 had no such luck, so in case you happen to own one such device then we have some good news for you! While Google is getting ready to launch Android 2.3 Gingerbread and while its manufacturer partners are working on dual-core Gingerbread devices, Sony Ericsson is rolling out Android 2.1 for its Xperia X8 customers. To be a little fair to Sony Ericsson, the Xperia X8 was launched a lot later than the Xperia X10 so the Eclair update is coming out a lot faster. But the problem is Sony Ericsson launched it with Android 1.6 on board in the first place.

I’ll particularly applaud the patience of those X8 owners that have been forced to deal with Android 1.6 since the phone was launched. It must really be annoying to see every other handset around you updated to Android 2.1 and even 2.2 while your device is still running Eclair.

Unfortunately, and you probably saw this coming, not every Xperia X8 owner is going to be able to upgrade 2.1 right away. The Android 2.1 update is going to be rolled out gradually and depending on what carrier you purchased the device from and on where you are in the world right now, you will have to wait a while before your X8 gets Anroid 2.1.

In order to see whether you qualify for this particular upgrade go check your SI number on the back on your X8 and then compare it against the extensive list available at the Via link below. In case your X8 is not going to be upgraded really soon, then you might want to consider dumping it in a ditch selling it on eBay and get yourself a brand new Android device, preferably one that can be upgraded to Gingerbread, and beyond.
