As you already know the official iPhone Dev Team Ultrasn0w unlock update is supposed to hit at some point this weekend and it looks like MuscleNerd’s new tweets confirm that the new iOS 4.2.1 can be unlocked.
Just like we announced earlier here on TFTS the first Ultrasn0w update coming by tomorrow at the latest will jailbreak iPhones 3G and 3GS models running iOS 4.2.1 as the iPhone Dev Team won’t wait for the iPhone 4 unlock to be completed before launch the next unlock version.
In fact MuscleNerd confirmed that iPhone 4s with baseband 01.59.00 will also be unlocked today, but that still leaves plenty of iPhone 4 units with new basebands waiting for the next update.
On the other hand, in case you own an iPhone 3GS with baseband 05.14.02 and iOS 4.1 than unlocking will be possible for now as just iPhone 4 with new basebands will still have to suffer.
Naturally if you’re wondering why the final iPhone 4 unlock is taking so long well, that’s because iPhone 4 unlocking is apparently very different than the 3G/3GS method.
MuscleNerd, whose tweets are pretty revealing, especially today, also says that work on iPhone 4 unlocking will continue past the weekend. The iPhone Dev Team has apparently some “very nice crashes for i4 BB” from Sherif Hashim and we should have more details for iPhone 4 owners in the near future.

Can you please tell me what version of software/firmware baseband a new iphone will come with if I go into the apple store and buy without a contract? I know that with a contract they turn it on and activate it right then and there, but if I buy without will it come with a version lesser than 4.1 or 4.2 so that it can be unlocked and jailbroken?
