Crytek Boss Says That Home Consoles Are Holding The PC Back [Crytek's Cervat Yerli Says That PC Games Suffer Because Of Home Consoles]

Crytek’s Cervat Yerli doesn’t seem to like Microsoft and Sony’s current gen consoles – in fact, he think they’re limiting his “creative expression.” The PC, he says, is already “a generation ahead” of current home consoles, and as a result, home consoles are holding PC titles back. “As long as the current console generation exists and as long as we keep pushing the PC as well, the more difficult it will be to really get the benefit of both,” he said in an interview with Edge Magazine.

However, I don’t think what he’s describing here is really the home console’s fault, because essentially, what he’s describing here is his distaste for not being able to push the graphical limits of the most high-end equipment out there. We saw it with Crysis and we’ll see it again with Crysis 2. What would help him out a lot is if he looked at it from a “free market” point-of-view:

If you’re a consumer, which arrangement would you prefer – having a high-end gaming PC that can handle the most beautiful graphics at the cost of having to upgrade every year or two, or owning a cheaper console that will last for a number of years, possibly 10+, while getting only decent, but not awe-inspiring, graphics?

I think the answer is clear, especially in rough economic times. Remember kids: gameplay over graphics, all the time, every time, and no matter what anyone tells you.

If you want to play these games the way developers intended them to be played – with the graphics set to the highest setting – then, yes, you would be updating frequently. It may not be every year, but certainly every couple of years or every third year.

In any case, it was a hypothetical, and I never claimed to primarily game on PC.

I wasn’t saying that consoles were better than PCs when it comes to gaming, I was simply saying that they aren’t holding back the PC like Yerli says. It’s the market; in times like these people are opting to go with a cheaper consoles rather than a high-end gaming rig, and it really shouldn’t be much of a surprise.
