Kinect's New Hacks Allow Gesture Internet Browsing, Multiple User Input
What, did you think Kinect hackers as a group just packed their stuff and gave up after an open source driver, a 3d representation and getting Microsoft to do a complete 180 on their no hacking stance and announce XNA compatibility to boot? Is there even such a group as Kinect hackers that could act as a completely coherent entity? The answer to both those questions is of course no, and today’s denials seem to be piling up.
So what these MIT dudes did was write “DepthJS” on a blackboard, then proceed to decide they will write a Kinect Javascript thingy with that name, a hack truly befitting the MIT Media Lab Fluid Interfaces Group. It might have taken all their Lab Fluid, but they managed to make the Kinect interface with a regular web browser and respond to gestures such as fist for selection and wave for scrolling. Apparently there’s also a company called Evoluce that is demonstrating a multitouch driver for Kinect as well as multiuser input, and they’re promising a Kinect-PC interface soon. This being done on investor dime though, we’d start saving up.
