Angry Birds for Android Already "Sold" in 7 Million Copies; Christmas Edition Coming Soon

Angry Birds is a hit mobile game, we already know that. It’s no wonder EA became interested in this particular franchise and subsequently purchased it for a cool $20 million. Rovio’s game is going viral no matter what platform we’re talking about. The game is fun, and very addictive and its creators aren’t stopping here either.

In fact Rovio confirmed that it has “sold” 7 million Angry Birds copies to Android users in just 6 months. That’s more than 1 million downloads per week! I say “sold” since the game is free in the Android Market although it does contain ads that appear throughout the game. The iOS games for iPhone and iPod touch or iPad are not available for free, although these game versions are ad-free.

Like I said, Rovio isn’t stopping here and a Christmas special edition Angry Birds version is coming out soon for iOS and Android devices. Before Halloween Rovio launched the Angry Birds Halloween edition for iOS devices and Android users weren’t invited to this particular party.

It now looks like Angry Birds Christmas edition, or at least some special Christmas levels will be available on both iOS and Android although it remains to be seen how many Android devices will support the game from launch. But considering that Angry Birds was downloaded 7 million times in 6 weeks I’d say that any upcoming Angry Birds game version will be compatible with lots of Android smartphones.

We have no idea whether other mobile platforms will also get special Christmas levels anytime soon, but at least we do know Level 5 is coming to current Angry Birds game versions. As for a Windows Phone 7 version of the game, well, it seems we still have to wait for that a while longer, if it will ever come, but hopefully we’ll have more details about upcoming Angry Birds games on December 11, Angry Birds day.
