PlayStation Phone Has An Amazing Screen [Insider Reports PSP Phone Uses Bravia HDTV Technology, Comes With Five Free Games, And Will Use The Rumored "Z-System" For Distribution]
There’s been a lot of talk lately about the PSP 2 / PlayStation Phone. Is it real? Is it fake? Sony Ericsson CEO (and TFTS friend) Bert Nordberg seemed to think it was real. Now, an inside source who was briefed on the phone has talked to popular tech website MobileCrunch. Here’s what they had to say about the device.

First thing, the source told MobileCrunch that the screen on the PlayStation Phone is “mind-blowing”. We personally suspect (and this is conjecture on our part, not the sources) that it’s using Sony’s “Super LCD” tech, which Sony has been offering up as a cheaper, more available counterpart to OLED screens. The source went on to say that the screen on the PSPhone was on par with the iPhone 4′s Retina display and said that the Sony guys who briefed him on it hinted that some tech from Sony’s HDTV Bravia division had trickled down to the phone.
The phone is said to be “no where near ready” and don’t expect it come out before Christmas. The Sony rep told the MobileCrunch source that they’re aiming for a February timeline. This would confirm what SE CEO Bert Nordberg said publicly. Nordberg hinted that the PSPhone could be unviled at the GSM Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which takes place in February. Starting to see a pattern here?
The phone is said to be sold contract-free, unlocked at a price of $500 which will include five free games. Some rumors have said that Sony will use a closed platform called “Z-System” to distribute the games. The source confirmed that the Sony reps did talk about the “Z-System”. Games for the PSPhone will be priced like mobile games (under $10), not PSP games ($30-$40). That’s good news, we guess.
While Nintendo is soldiering one with a traditional gaming handheld, it looks like Sony is going for the iPhone’s market with a hybrid handheld/mobile phone. Time will tell if this stunt works out for Sony.
